Ice skating and Christmas markets
There are two rinks in the city centre this year, both open until 3 January and both closed on Christmas Day. The Pier Head one is covered, so it's the safer bet if the weather turns.
Liverpool Christmas Wonderland
A covered ice rink in front of the Three Graces, so skating goes ahead whatever the weather. There are rides, a light walk, food stalls, a bar and Santa's Grotto, and you can wander round without a ticket.
- Off-peak means Monday to Wednesday, plus Thursday and Friday sessions starting before 5pm, up to 11 December. Peak (weekends, evenings and every day from 14 December) is £17 adults, £14 children, £58 for a family of four.
- Skate hire is included. Card payments only.
- Step-free throughout, with accessible toilets and baby changing. Wheelchair users pay a reduced price and a carer goes free.
- No parking on site. James Street station is about five minutes' walk.
Skate St George's
An outdoor rink in front of St George's Hall, with a Big Wheel, a Christmas tree maze, a carousel, a Santa train, a Christmas market of local traders and a rooftop bar.
- Shorter hours on Christmas Eve (10am to 6pm), Boxing Day and New Year's Day (midday to 10pm).
- Skate hire is included. Booking ahead is a good idea for evenings and weekends; on the day it's card only.
- The Big Wheel and other rides are paid for at each ride, by card.
- Wheelchair users are welcome on the ice, and a carer or personal assistant goes free.
Christmas Craft & Flea Market
A one-day Christmas market of independent makers in the crypt under the Metropolitan Cathedral, with handmade and vintage stalls. Good for presents you won't find in the shops.
- Booking ahead gets you priority entry, but you can stay as long as you like.
Christmas lights
Noël: the Christmas light show at Liverpool Cathedral
The cathedral is filled with projections, light and music for Noël, a new Christmas show from the artists Luxmuralis, following years of sell-out light shows at the cathedral.
- Peak tickets are £12.50 adults, £10.50 children (3 to 15), £36 for a family of four. Under 3s and carers go free.
- There's a quieter session, with fewer people and lower music, on Wednesday 2 December from 4.30pm to 5pm.
Where to see Santa
Santa's Grotto at Christmas Wonderland
A private visit, so you don't share Santa with another family, and every child with a ticket goes home with a gift.
- Booked separately from skating, so you can do one or both.
- Babies under one go free with a paying brother or sister, but don't get a gift.
- Photos are taken for you and are on sale on the way out, from £6.
- Step-free.
Santa's Secret Forest
